Squire - Version 1.2

Hello! For this update of the Squire, I decided to put the changes in a devlog rather than the document itself, because as you can see there are a lot of changes. I also just had a lot of thoughts to get out about the work put into this project, and I felt like sharing. A huge thanks to the people who provided feedback on this Class, you helped me improve it a lot.

Changelog (there may a couple small things I missed)

  • New! Added the Hero’s Right Hand Skill. This Skill is meant to convey the historical role of a Squire, one who serves a more prominent and/or famous figure. I also wanted to play around with specific Bond emotions, as FabUlt features that work with specific emotions are few and far between. The admiration part of this Skill spotlights allies who you wish to elevate and take on burdens for. The inferiority part might reflect resentment at other characters having more glory/fame/grandeur (allies and enemies), an exploration of not feeling good enough, or the idea of stepping up when an ally falters. Originally, the specific emotions I chose were loyalty and inferiority; loyalty was later switched to disincentivize pigeonholing a Squire's Bonds with group members into those two emotions specifically. With two emotions from the same mutually-exclusive pair, a character with this Skill must actively choose which benefit to make available for which other characters.
  • New! Added the Team Player Skill. With teamwork being a core theme of this Class, it made perfect sense to connect it to the existing Teamwork rules. In addition to supercharging the Squire’s ability to help allies, it provides a sort of “mini Guard action” for the Squire as consolation for giving up their turn to aid an ally during conflict. While this can certainly be played to the detriment of a player's fun -- if they keep forgoing their turns to boost allies' rolls, not really taking actions themselves -- it's my hope that players and groups keep the core principles of FabUlt in mind and play toward what's fun. That, and Follow-up gives a character incentive to use their action for themselves.
  • Removed the My Strength is Yours Skill, as well as its associated Heroic Skills. It wasn’t really communicating the teamwork vibe I wanted for the Class, it was kinda fiddly, and I was never really a big fan of it. Sort of replaced with Team Player.
  • Removed the Galvanized Skill. Too plain, too passive, too easily stacked with other sources of damage reduction.
  • Arming Maneuver now requires an action to use, so that it's no longer available for whenever a character performs the Equipment action (as there are some features in other Classes that buff the Equipment action or provide it for free). Reworded some of the effects for clarity. Added “HR equals 0 when calculating damage” for the free attack option for balance purposes. Reduced the amount of damage reduction from the final option, and limited its duration to the start of the character’s next turn.
  • Reworked the Follow-Up Skill to more efficiently communicate what targets to follow up on, and to get around odd rules cases where multi happens. Reduced the scope of its effects to focus just on damage. Team Player has inherited Follow-up's old non-damage usefulness.
  • Removed the option “may take their turn immediately after yours” Skill from Tactical Leverage. Too much overlap with Commander.
  • Rewrote the class description.
  • Minor rewording in the backstory questions.
  • Existing Heroic Skills were opened up to other Classes accessing them via Class mastery (ie. you may master a few Classes other than Squire to get these Heroic Skills).
  • Twin Point Strike now stipulates that both attacks treat HR as 0 when calculating damage, in line with the change to Arming Maneuver.
  • Tactical Launch now allows the user to propel their ally off of their shield and into the sky, making them fly for a bit. Catapulting an ally off of your shield is how I've always envisioned this Skill personally, and I wanted to have that in this Heroic, as a treat.
  • New! Added three new Heroic Skills that play off of the Squire’s Skills, themes, and some nifty Class combinations.
    • Hot Swap imagines a magitech-minded “pit crew” character, giving you the ability to change magicannon damage types and swap personal vehicle modules.
      • There is a bit of redundancy with the Pilot's Flexible Configuration Skill here, but only if a character has a single level in it. The key motive for this inclusion is in letting a Squire character help a Pilot ally with their mech mid-conflict, but I wanted to ensure that there was some usefulness present if the Squire is the only Pilot in a group.
    • Oath of Vengeance adds an aggressive edge to forming and holding Bonds with enemies. This explicitly pops with Darkblade, and it's also inspired by the Fury's tagline in the core book. ("I'll just have to become stronger than you!")
      • Oath of Vengeance is a streamlined version of a work-in-progress bit of tech where the Squire could unlock Oaths/Vows that keyed off of specific Bond emotions. It was ultimately scrapped for being overly complicated and pulling too much focus away from the rest of the Class, but I'll probably be doing something else with it in the near future.
    • Network Connection envisions a techno-fantasy “remote assistance” character, giving the player further benefits when acting remotely via the Navigator Skill. I picture this as uploading and downloading equipment and other effects through the soul network, but other flavorings (such as teleportation and out-of-body projection) work well, too.
      • It's a little rules-obscure, but it should be noted (and maybe I'll need to clarify this Heroic a bit in the document) that Network Connection does not let you make a free attack against an enemy who's a travel day away from you. That is still limited by the rules on targeting with attacks (you have to be able to see them). You may, however, make a free attack against someone you can see, if a split party is taking on two conflicts at once.

And that's it! Thanks for taking an interest in this project, and I hope you enjoy!
